What is Arts Therapy?

Arts therapy is a gentle form of psychotherapy that utilises the arts (visual arts-making, drama, and dance/movement) to aid communication, self-expression and processing. It can be helpful for those who are currently experiencing a wide range of emotional, behavioural, and mental health needs, regardless of their age, ability, skill set, or background. Arts therapy is not about creating a final art product, it's about the process of creating and the emotions and insights that arise. By physically manifesting our internal experience we are able to create a sense of distance and safety needed to reflect, unpack and process.

  • In an arts therapy session the therapeutic process is tactile, imaginative and playful, and complementary to the processing style of children and teens. Sessions involve engaging with age-appropriate art materials and interventions to help clients express themselves freely and begin to understand their needs and emotions in a safe and non-judgemental environment. Conversation is welcome but not always necessary or comfortable for a client and I will adjust to meet the needs of each individual.

  • In a session I invite clients to draw on the arts, alongside conversation, to create tangible representations of internal experiences, or simply utilise the arts as a tool for self-regulation. This gentle creative process can help a client gain new insight into emotions and behaviours, or uncover unconscious belief systems and unmet needs. Creativity can also be used to honour experiences of significant change or loss. Clients don’t need to be “good” at art, the emphasis lies on the process of making and the emotions and awareness that come with it, rather than the end result.
