What does an arts therapy session look like?

In an arts therapy session the making process becomes a tool for communication and clarity. This could involve using a variety of materials, such as paint, clay, poetry, movement or collage, to create a piece that reflects their experience, or to use the creative process to support regulation alongside conversation.

An art therapist can guide the client through prompts or suggest materials, but the client ultimately has control over their own creative process. It is not a therapist's job to interpret a creation. Instead, the therapist observes as the client creates and may offer reflections to help the client gain more insight into their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. There will be space for some form of sense-making as well as carefully closing the session, this could include conversation or further art making.

I will be fully present with you throughout the process and ensure you feel safe and that your needs are met.
